My all time favorite place in the universe would definitely be Lake McConaughy. My family has been going there multiple times each summer since I was a wee one. Colorado and Nebraska share my heart.
I was going through some old photos and found a couple gems of us growing up in good ol’ small town USA.
Even at age 4 I couldn’t control my hair. My mom would always braid it, but somehow after hours and hours of mud, water and sun it turned into a rats nest. I just can’t figure out how 😉
My baby sister+my dad’s life jacket. Just too. dang. precious.
They used back this slide attached to a trailer into the lake. It was the most terrifying, awesome, biggest rush of adrenaline a 6 year old could imagine. I wish they still had this bad boy.
My first fish! If you were wondering why I had 3 bandaids on my head, let me tell you why.
- I slipped and ran into the baseboard at my house in colorado. 6 stitches and a trip to the ER later… bandaid numero uno.
- The school door hit me in the face on a windy day. Hello bandaid #2.
- I tripped over my cousins bike that trip. Fell right on my face.
Yep. I was a really graceful child.
I also had a really mini fishing pole. And my sister (on the right) refused to wear anything but oversized t-shirts for an entire year.
I think I was a freshman in high school in this picture. Showin’ a little love for our country on 4th of July. It was SUPER HOT and super humid that day.
One of my favorite things to do is take a truck down to the beach and go muddin’ at night time. We’ve gotten stuck more times than I can count. Good thing all our neighbors have chains, and keep their cell phones on loud for us crazy kids.
Every year during labor day we have a “Trailer Hood Poker Run.” Each family sets up a game (and drink of their choice!) and you drive around in your golf carts to each house. You gain points and get drunk. But mostly get drunk. Whoever has the most points at the end winds 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize… which are usually homemade gifts and somehow beer related. I swear we’re not alcoholics, they go to meetings. We go to parties 😉
The “prize ceremony” is followed by a pig roast and LOTS of yummy food. Topped off with a bonfire.
Heaven on earth.
Words cannot describe how I feel about this place.
It has helped me grow as immensely as a person by teaching me the importance of memories over material objects. It has given me an incredible family and support system, and taught me that laughter, love and a day on the water are the greatest gifts of life.
….and has shown me that no matter how much I try I can never brush out my lake hair.
This you guys, is my safe haven. My second home and where my heart belongs.
Where is your special place?
Anywhere that brings back childhood memories?
