On Friday afternoon, Ian and I ditched the office in favor of making the 3ish hour drive to Nebraska to spend the weekend at one of our absolute favorite getaways — Lake McConaughy.
My family has been going to the lake for decades, and I’ve spent many a weekend making the trek from Denver to Ogallala to get our fill of sand, lake water + giant toads! When I was younger, we used to camp — in high school however, my family bought two cabins and so there’s absolutely no excuse for me not to head up there any chance I get. I mean, all we really need is beer + a bikini!
We arrived on Friday evening (after a quick stop for Taco Bell in Ft. Morgan) and immediately headed to my aunt and uncle’s cabin to catch up with old friends, have a few beers and just enjoy the fact we were all in our own little paradise.
On Saturday, I woke up bright and early (after having moth dreams all night… because I so happened to find a dead moth in my bed that night) and we headed out on our family friend’s boat. We have a boat of our own, but after many mechanical problems and overheating we’ve decided to sell the little 85′ Bayliner that oh-so-lovingly received the name “Aquaholic” many years back.
Summer also swam in the lake for the first time and was devastated that she couldn’t touch the bottom. When her feet are firmly planted on the ground she loves “swimming” — take that away and she turns into a nervous wreck.
Good news is she loves her “suit” (swimsuit) and “coat” (life jacket). Oh, and she also decided that she wants to refer to Ian has NayNay. Uncle Nay Nay it is!
Some how I ended up getting FRIED even though I’m a freak about sunscreen and sunburns. After a night of Costco-bought taquitos and laughing with friends, we fell asleep about midnight and enjoyed a peaceful night’s rest with the lull of a small storm that rolled in.
Ian went golfing the next morning with my uncle (there’s a golf course a few miles up the road!) and I hung out with my Aunt, Summer and Alisha. It wasn’t long before we hit the road back to Denver and stopped for a strawberry milkshake before arriving home sunburned, sleepy and full of smiles.
T-minus 10 days until we’re back for the 4th!
