Why didn’t anyone remind me that I loathe training for summer races? When Fit Approach + Skirt Sports reached out to me about running the Skirt Sports 13er this summer, I was so game. I love Colorado races and thought it would be a good excuse for me to hit the pavement during my lunch break.
But then… life happened. As always. I was slammed at work and traveling every 2 weeks — thus the long runs never happened. So, I dropped down to the 10k and found out shortly after that Heather had done the same. YAY for having a running partner!
The morning of the race I toed the starting line with Heather and wavered on whether or not we would run the 10k or 5k. You see, we both didn’t realize how busy the summer would be and neither of us had anytime to run at all… let alone train!
So, about a mile my legs felt like lead and I told Heather we should just run the 5k and enjoy ourselves. Enjoy ourselves, we did! We spent the entire 3.1 miles chatting and walked the entirety of the giant hill at mile 1.5.
Although it wasn’t the original 13.1 miles like we intended it to be, it was still a wonderful morning full or fresh air and sunshine! Not to mention, many participants were running their first race ever, as part of Skirt Sports Kick Start program. It was extremely uplifting to see these women finally accomplish something they have been working so hard for. That’s what running is all about, people!!
If you’re wavering on whether or not to do your first race, I highly recommend signing up for this one. The atmosphere is very welcoming and not overwhelming — perfect for a beginner!
In the end, it didn’t really matter how far or how fast we ran — my Sunday was filled with a few chatty miles, post-race chocolate chip pancakes and a nap! How’s that for a win?
Disclosure: Thanks to Skirt Sports + Fit Approach for comping my entry!
