There are numerous ways to contribute to a healthier mind, body and emotional state. The food you put in your body, the amount of sleep you get. Heck, I could go on and on about the things that I try to do every day to make sure that I live the most efficient, happiest life that I can.
But, to me, the biggest contribution that I can make to my health isn’t solely about the times I go to CrossFit. It isn’t about making sure I only eat the healthiest of foods.
Although I do love to cook healthy meals, work up a sweat in my CrossFit gym and make sure that I get 8-9 hours of sleep every night, the one thing that makes the biggest difference in my mind, body and soul is this:
There’s something about being outdoors that truly soothes the soul. You can’t buy a candle for real fresh air. You can’t feel the morning chill on your ears from inside your house. You can’t buy this, and you can’t get it anywhere else.
In fact, the majority of my hobbies include being outdoors, and when I think about it, the majority of my childhood memories have been centered around playing outside.
Don’t know where to start? Just take a walk in the mornings or after dinner — you won’t be sorry! Leave the phone at home. Enjoy the silence. Savor the change of the sun.
I’m no expert, but I will tell you this: if you’re struggling to change your lifestyle, pick one thing to do that’s OUTDOORS and see how your life changes.
Wintertime? Learn to ski, snowshoe or even go outside and sled.
Fall? Trail running and hiking is always my favorite. Pack a bag and have a picnic at the top!
Summer? Paddleboarding, swimming and playing in the water.
Spring? Take plenty of walks to enjoy the newly-bloomed flowers and greenery.
Try it. Take a step outside your door and see what’s waiting for you.
